LESSON

An abbreviation is a shortened form of a word.

We use abbreviations for measurements.

      eg  hp - horsepower
            tsp - teaspoon
            MB - megabyte

It used to be correct to put a full stop after an abbreviation.  In current business practice, this is no longer required.
 

Handy Hint

To prevent confusion with the number 1, 
the abbreviation for litre 
has changed from 
l (lower case)
to L (capital).
